Voices From Heaven is a documentary filmed by Italian-born Giuseppe Asaro. It’s a tribute to master qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who died in August 1997.

The film features Nusrat’s leading role as an ambassador of world music by including segments of concert footage, from shows for college students in Berkeley, California, to a gathering of Sufis in Pakistan.

A Voice from Heaven was screened at the L.A./AFI film festival.

The makers of this film write:

“Development aid distinguishes itself from relief aid through its structural character. But what is the lasting result of this structural approach? In the past many mistakes have been made. This documentary shows that a more personal approach with emphasis on the uniqueness of a culture leads to better results. This approach is highlighted by a nocturnal concert of Baaba Maal.”
