A Thing of Wonder, Excerpt is a documentary video featuring Jerry Andrus. He is an 83-year old magician, inventor and poet that has an insatiable appetite for uncovering the mysteries of life on the boundary between reason and illusion.

Wandering through his Albany, Oregon, “Castle of Chaos,” he demonstrates his incredible inventions (like the Tri-Zonal Space Warper), and waxes philosophic on the subjects of reason, perception, God and what he calls “the curse of contentment.”

The video also reflects not only his creative genius, but also his principled lifestyle and profound involvement with the problems of human existence, A Thing of Wonder pays tribute to a man devoted equally to the science and magic of wonder.

The film features a compassionate yet painfully honest depiction of one man’s suffering, charting the impact of his delusional manic episodes, paralyzing depressions, and his struggle to come to terms with the legacy of his father. It also shows Sam tremendous talent for photography, his clear intelligence and supportive family – the film talks to us all about the importance of enduring hope and familial love.

This film is a tremendous achievement that deserves a wide audience.

Question: Why can’t we talk straight when blindfolded? There is still no good answer. You might think you’re walking straight, but as NPR’s Robert Krulwich reports, a map of your route would reveal you are doomed to walk in circles. Undoubtedly, going straight is difficult if not impossible.

Film maker Jawed Taiman (an Afghan now living in the UK), meets and observes families who are addicted to opium in Kabul, Afghanistan. He also observes the patients and workers of a private detox treatment centre, desperately under-funded, struggling to help the many victims of the Afghan opium trade. We are privileged to meet addicted youths, and are offered a rare insight into detox centres working in Afghanistan and into the lives of whole families who are blighted with drugs. There are over 10000 islands within the Pacific Ocean located between Asia and America, the vast majority of which possess little geopolitical importance in periods of peace but, during the Second World War, a good many of these outposts suffered through the dismal experience of armed conflict between two widely separated nations: Japan and the United States. This dramatic documentary, an Armed Forces Information Film, completed a year before the war’s end, is dedicated to the men of the United States Navy, a fighting organization which fulfilled a most significant role in bringing about the defeat of Japan; the combat footage, although propagandistic, is startling. Following a valuable introduction describing the variegated Pacific islands and their denizens, effective use is made of film and graphics to describe the spread of Japanese military power from its base south to Australia, including the attack at Pearl Harbor, and provides excellent coverage of the methods used by members of the Allies, particularly the U.S., to prepare for counterattacks against Japan, bloodily advancing from island to island. Top-flight editing marks this work wherein all scenes are filmed by combat photographers, and although largely devoted to Naval/Marine achievements, the contributions of both the American Army and Army Air Force are highlighted as well, and scenes of the Jimmy Doolittle led bombing attack of Tokyo are particularly memorable.
